LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commenced the public display of personal particulars and academic credentials for presidential candidates participating in the 2027 general election on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
The electoral body made the documents submitted by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Vice President Kashim Shettima available for public inspection across its offices nationwide. Golden Info reports that INEC placed the Form EC9 submissions on view to allow public verification of candidate details.
Copies of the Form EC9 for Tinubu show he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with honours from Chicago State University in the United States on June 22, 1979. His National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge documents indicate service in Oyo State from December 1982 to November 1983. His employment history lists Mobil Nigeria Limited from 1983 to 1992, the Lagos State Government from 1999 to 2007, and the Federal Government of Nigeria from 2023 to date. Entries for his primary and secondary school attendance dates were entered as “0000“, while his date of birth was recorded as March 29, 1952, listing his age as 74, his birthplace as Lagos, and his address as No. 4, Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi.
For Shettima, the submitted records detail primary education at Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978 under the Ministry of Education, North-Eastern State, where he finished second out of 22 pupils. His West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, dated June 1983, show six credits and passes, including a distinction in Religious Knowledge and Economics. He obtained a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in August 1989 and a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan, completing NYSC service from October 1989 to October 1990.
The public display is a statutory requirement under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which mandates INEC to publish candidates’ particulars within 21 days of receipt. The documents are displayed at electoral offices nationwide, including the Lagos State office in Sabo-Yaba and Local Government Area offices. “Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties,” INEC stated.
Campaign activities for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on August 19, 2026, according to the commission’s timetable.
