ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s House of Representatives held a rowdy session on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to summon Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, to explain the alleged non-funding of constituency projects.
Golden Info reports that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a lawmaker representing Abia State under the Labour Party, moved the motion calling for the President to appear before the chamber over persistent delays in funding constituency projects across the country.
Following the seconding of the motion, another lawmaker proposed an amendment that the legislative body suspend plenary sessions for one week until the funding issue is resolved, sparking a heated debate on the floor.
Yusuf Gagdi, a lawmaker representing Plateau State for the All Progressives Congress, opposed the motion, arguing that the implementation and funding of constituency projects fall within the responsibilities of relevant ministries, departments, and agencies. Gagdi also rejected the proposal to suspend legislative activities, describing the measure as unnecessary.
The disagreement resulted in shouting matches and disorder in the chamber before the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, intervened and directed that the lawmakers vote on the matter to determine the official position.
